Rookie Power: Youngster Alex Schlopy Goes Big, Lands Skiing Big Air Gold Before Record Crowd at Winter X 15
41,800. A record Winter X Games crowd…and each and every one of those on hand was electrified by the enormous runs busted out by Oakley ski ripper Alex Schlopy, whose top score of 92 landed him the Ski Big Air Gold in his first-ever appearance at Winter X. His killer switch double cork 14 and a double cork 16, tricks he’d never done before Winter X 15, proved to be unbeatable – taking out last year’s Gold Medalist Bobby Brown.
Sammy Carlson knew that the Skiing Slopestyle Final on Saturday would be more than challenging with new faces charging and elevating the standard. But Oakley’s Star Skier more than stepped up to the plate, throwing down a rail section 270 joystick grab, kangaroo flip, double rodeo 900, double flat 900 and a double cork 1080 in his first run to secure his first Gold in the event.
It’s never been done at Winter X. But Oakley’s Torstein Horgmo busted out a huge triple cork in the Snowboard Big Air Contest, dazzling the amped up crowd on hand and grabbing the Gold medal. Youngster and X Games rookie Sebastien Toutant’s score of 79 was just a single point behind Torstein’s 80.
