There’s no BMX event quite like Texas Toast. What it lacks in mega sponsors and guilded venues, it more than makes up for in energy and excitement and spontaneity. Time limits are relative, boundaries don’t really exist; the crowd calls the end of a run, the riders dictate when and how they ride and no one is any less stoked on what goes down, from the organizers to the fans to the sponsors. It’s a BMX event exactly as the BMX community likes it.

Dennis Enarson had big plans coming into the summer of 2013. Photo trips, training and contests, contests, contests. He was doing some of the best riding of his career when a momentary lapse of concentration flung him head-first toward the deep end of the X Games Park course in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil. He escaped with only a broken wrist and a scrape on his chin (and the Bronze Medal), but his next two months were mostly sunk. He sat out the Barcelona and Munich legs of X Games, but he’s feeling healthy and motivated for the last X Games of the year and the last-ever X Games event in Los Angeles. We caught up with the 22-year-old San Diegan to see how things were going.

Dennis Enarson was so close to taking home a win in a new discipline at Dew Tour Toyota City Championships in San Francisco. He had one last run to win it all. Though he nailed the run, the judges scores had him come up just short, and he settled for second. “I just wanted to think of one solid run. The first two I messed up on, so it was nice to have a third run to get everything together,” Enarson said. He held nothing back in the last run, throwing down a high-speed flat ground 360, a huge gap to wall ride and a perfect backflip tailwhip over the box. He knew that he had to step it up and ended up pulling the exact run he had put together in his head, but it just wasn’t enough to hold on to first over Garrett Reynolds.
