Three: Jordy Smith Claims Third at Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, Holds On To World No. 3 in ASP Standings

Jordy Smith plowed through to the final rounds at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast last week.

But Oakley’s South African star ripper’s killer run came to a halt as his 11.40 score wasn’t enough to top second-place finisher Taj Burrow, who finished with a 17.56 in the Semifinals – handing the third podium spot to Jordy. Kelly Slater went on to secure the win.

“It’s disappointing when everything seems to be going well and the surf doesn’t cooperate,” said Jordy, who will hold on to his third spot in the ASP World Title standings. “Taj (Burrow) surfed amazing though and third place is still a good start for me. I’m looking forward to the next event and I’ll just put my head down and work hard until then.”

Despite the final result, Jordy’s impressive display of signature power and sheer style had him in the hunt the entire event. Dramatic last-minute victories over Joel Parkinson and Alejo Muniz pointed to one fact: the 2010 ASP World Title runner up is clearly in form and hungry for this year’s title.

He convincingly took round Round 1 as he topped Pat Gudauskas and Aussie wildcard Mitch Crews to move directly into Round 3 where, after the contest was delayed for seven days waiting for swell, he knocked out veteran Corey Lopez with the highest scores of the round (17.17 points out of 20) to reach the final 12.

Despite a slight hiccup Round 4, the so-called ‘demonstration round’ where none of the surfers are eliminated, finishing third behind Brett Simpson and fellow Oakley rider Adriano de Souza, the South African charged back into the mix with a huge high scoring Round 5 victory over perennial ASP World Title contender and local hero Joel Parkinson to advance to the quarterfinals. His momentum set the stage for the non-eventful semifinal.

All in all, one solid event for Jordy! Watch out for him and his fellow O riders as they mash into Bells Beach in late April for the next World Tour stop.
