Adriano De Souza Kick-Starts his 2012 WTC Campaign with a 2nd Place Finish at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast
The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast culminated in dramatic fashion with Oakley’s own Adriana de Souza surfing head-to-head with perennial ASP World Title contender Taj Burrow.
Adriano had put on strong performances throughout the event and was easily one of the event’s top performers. His gouging turns and inverted aerials ultimately did land him a podium finish. Just not the one he had been eyeing…
In the dying moments of his final heat Adriano launched a massive air-reverse in a last ditch attempt to acquire the 7.87 points he needed to assume the lead.
Everyone at Snapper Rocks collectively held their breath as the judges’ deliberation dragged on. Unfortunately for Adriano, when the decision was finally announced, he had come up a mere 0.27 points short and assumed the role of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast runner-up for the second time. In 2009, Adriano finished second behind Joel Parkinson.
The result is a testament to Adriano’s consistently top-notch surfing. He is undoubtedly one of the top talents in the world and a force that all surfers on tour should be weary of.
“I’m really happy with my result here today,” De Souza said. “It was such an amazing Final. Last year Taj and I had such a great heat here as well. It was one of the best heats of my life and he beat me. It’s amazing to be on the podium here again. In 2009, it was me and Joel [Parkinson]. It’s a great way to start the year and I’m happy to be back up here.”
Congrats to Adriano on a hard fought finish! There’s nothing like a podium result at the first event of the year to kick-start a surfer’s WCT campaign.
