Simply Sage

The Multifaceted Persona of Sage Erickson

scroll

Sage Erickson isn't simple. She's a young, talented, multifaceted woman, with interests as varied as the stamps in her passport.

By trade she's a professional surfer, logging countless airline miles traveling the globe, riding some of the best waves the Earth has to offer while competing on the elite World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour. But surfing is only a part of Sage Erickson's persona. It's her vessel for opportunity. It provides a physical and emotional outlet and a means to make a living, but it also allows her the flexibility to pursue and discover other interests in-between contests and flights, as well as connect with people around the world.

"I think we each have our own right to pursue the things that appeal to us and make us feel alive," Erickson said in an interview with the WSL.

The array of interests and passions are the perfect cocktail of creativity and healthy living that makes Sage Erickson the Sage Erickson we all know and admire. Born in California, raised on the North Shore and currently residing in Ojai, Calif., she's part free-spirit, part career-driven young professional. A couple years back, after losing her major sponsor and falling off the World Tour, she could have curled up in a ball in the corner of her room and disappeared from the sport and industry. Instead, she re-committed and re-created herself – and she's stronger and happier for it.

Without further ado, the multifaceted elements of the life of Ms. Sage Erickson, in no particular order, in her own words.

Art

Creativity has always been an outlet for me. A quiet place where I feel inspired to reflect on my thoughts. What better place to express that than on my equipment which I use every day out in the ocean.

Competition

...also known as my work place for 10 months out of the year. I'm constantly working on ways that I can control the variables outside of a heat because we all know that one can not control the ocean in your favor.

Travel

I'm constantly in awe of the places I've been to and yet to see. The world is a magnificent place, there shouldn't be a moment missed.

Fashion

An expression of oneself. Similar to surfing, where everyone has their own style – the same goes on land with fashion. People use fashion as a way of expressing their own personal self and I love that about it. I get excited about getting dressed in the morning! I feel that after my surfing career is over, it's a career path I might follow.

Surfing

The one constant. Surfing is that one thing is my life that never changes. No matter what result, what kind of day; happy or sad. The ocean seems to show up every day ready to listen to my heart and/or make me work that much harder for my career. Surfing is one of my biggest inspirations of life at the moment.

Training

It makes me confident in myself. Physical athleticism can never be conquered. There's always room for improvement and I love the challenge of that.
