New Eyewear for Cyclops Revealed in X-Men: Days of Future Past
It is always a roll of the dice when the sequel to a beloved movie is born. Will it live up to the original? Will it remain true to the heritage of the story? Or will it tarnish the memory of its predecessor?
In the case of Marvel’s ever-popular X-Men franchise, their reputation aligns with the former and the latest release, X-Men: Days of Future Past, in theaters now, only extends that legacy.
Oakley has had the unique privilege of being a part of that 14-year history as the creator of the unmistakable eyewear worn by the first official X-Men member, Cyclops.
The relationship stems all the way back to X-Men Origins in 2000 when Cyclops was featured wearing a customized Juliet from Oakley’s own X-Metal collection. As the character and the franchise evolved so did the eyewear; in X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand, Oakley custom tailored a X-Metal Penny to shield the beams of Cyclop’s uncontrolled optic blasts. Today, with the latest movie looking into the future, X-Men Prop Master Simone Leclerc again reached out to Oakley for help creating yet another new look for this legendary character.
“I had to design and custom build about 200 props for X-Men: Days of Future Past,” said Leclerc. “I already had an idea of what I wanted [for Cyclops] and when I came to Oakley I discovered that the RadarLock was exactly what I had envisioned and to top it off it fit Marsden’s very angular face perfectly.”
From there Lecerc worked with the Oakley design team to add some custom details to the glass and lenses, which lend it that truly “futuristic” look.
“I always enjoy working on these projects,” said Oakley designer James Lareau who also worked on the Mission Impossible project. “Hans [Moritz] and I only had two and half days to deliver this glass. I literally worked for those two days straight!” Lareau continued, “We really only went through two iterations. One, which never made it out of the sketch phase and the one you’ll see in the movie.”
The result is another signature piece, only 4 of which were made in total, that is sure to have many die hard fans clamoring to get their hands on a pair for their personal collections.
