Oakley Groms Weekend Out

The first official weekend of the year also kicked off the 2006 events series. Oakley teamed up with Bear Mountain and Red Bull to create an entire weekend of competition, bowling, and “The Community Project” film. Saturday, the Oakley Big Day Out contest started off on the packed slopes of southern California under beautiful sunny skies. The 90+ groms attacked the brand new course put together by the park staff featuring a bank to rail, wall ride, and two rails.

First up were the 15 & Under, followed by the 16 & Over Men’s division qualifiers, the top ten in each advancing to the finals. The women advanced straight to a final and blew everyone away with there style and technical tricks. Melissa Evens and Gabrielle Maiden battled back and forth on the down bar and flat down rail. Zak Hale, Tyler Houeron, and Tucker Norred dominated the 15 & under division and ended up placing 1, 2, and 3. The 16 & Over Men’s division witness Josh Kyser attempting to 450 the flat down and handplanting the bank to rail. In the end it was the consistent and smooth riding of Mikey McMillin that took home the Oakley Thump 2’s, Crowbar’s, and head to toe outerwear outfit.

Saturday night in Big Bear means going to the Bowling Barn. Oakley and Red Bull rented out lanes, brought in pizza, turned down the lights, and fired up “The Community Project” on the big screen. Mix groms, Redbull, bowling and watch out, the result was a spectacle of pins crashing and nervous bowling alley employees.
