Polarized Oakley Inmates® Land Starring Role in ‘The Book of Eli’

newstory1

In the not-too-distant future, some 30 years after the final war, a solitary man walks across the wasteland that was once America. Empty cities, broken highways, seared earth—all around him, the marks of catastrophic destruction. There is no civilization here, no law. The roads belong to gangs that would murder a man for his shoes, an ounce of water…or for nothing at all.

But they’re no match for Eli (played by two-time Oscar ® winner Denzel Washington). He has something to protect. And he wears Polarized
Oakley Inmate sunglasses.

‘He’s Not Like The Others’

The Book of Eli, the new, post-apocalyptic thriller from Warner Bros., has a distinct Oakley flair about it. In addition to his Inmate sunglasses, Eli harbors the film’s namesake, a book he has carried for thirty years and is determined to protect, in his Oakley backpack. It’s the same pack under which Eli conceals perhaps the most distinctive tool in his arsenal: a short, machete-hybrid blade that comes in especially handy during a fight scene that begins with Eli warning a n’er-do-well gangster, “You lay that hand on me again and you will not get it back.” Portions of that scene are visible in the preview included below.

More Than Meets Denzel’s Eye

In the spirit of “Terminator Salvation” and “G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra”, the visibility of Oakley products in The Book of Eli fit seamlessly into the film’s dazzling production design. In pre-production, the film’s directors and cinematographer elected to shoot The Book of Eli with the RED digital camera, which records directly to a flash or hard disk. Ironically, the RED camera was created by Oakley founder Jim Jannard.

The Book of Eli opens in theatres on January 15, 2010.
