The O Lab Australia “plays it safe” with Surfing for Girls!

For the Rolling O Lab’s second and third stops in Victoria, Australia we have teamed up with The Play it Safe by the Water Surfing for Girls initiative sponsored by Oakley and GRLmobile.

The initiative is about teaching the girls the proper techniques of surfing allowing them to surf in a safer environment; keeping them safer in the water and better on their boards.

7x World Champion and Australian surfing legend Layne Beachley was in attendance to give the girls some of her first hand knowledge on surfing and being safe while you do it.

For the first session the girls were broken up into groups based on their skill levels. Then the coaches went over reading the water, basic surfing skills, and beach rescue techniques to be able to help a fellow surfer if necessary. And finally they headed off into the waves with the coaches to have a surf.

For session two, all the girls got a chance to paddle out and test their new skills with some of the girls they look up to on the Surfing Victoria team including Nikki Van Dijk who just recently placed 2nd at the Australian National Junior Championships.

The Lab was able to attend two stops on this tour, one at Jan Juc and the other at Ocean Grove. Both events were a huge success with over 100 girls showing up between the two events. Each participant received an Oakley tee, prizes from GRLmobile, and chances to win through out the day with random drawings. They also received some new knowledge on Oakley’s HDO and tips on staying safe while surfing.

Layne Beachley had this to say about the event, “I taught myself how to surf and had bad technique which created dangers in the water. These girls are learning correct technique and skills which will allow them to be better surfers and be safer in the water.” Not only did Layne spend two sessions out in the water with the girls each day, but she stayed late to make sure every last girl who wanted an autograph got one.

With the smiles we saw… from the girls to the parents, and anyone involved in the event, I think everyone left happy.

We would like to give A BIG THANKS to Layne, the Surfing Victoria Team, GRLmobile, Global Surf Industries, Oakley, and Max, Peter and their whole crew at Surfing Victoria for making this such a great event. Cheers!
